On February 8, 1967, about 4 a. m., a burglar alarm was triggered at the Alter Company, a junkyard, located in the town of Campbell, in La Crosse county. The alarm system rang at the sheriffs office; and Deputy Sheriff William Boma was dispatched to the scene immediately. As the deputy arrived at the junkyard he observed the defendant, whom he had known previously, leaving the office building of the Alter Company. The defendant did not stop when so ordered but attempted to escape by climbing the fence. Several officers followed footprints in the snow leading to an apartment building where defendant was arrested.
